An intriguing tree with large heart shaped velvety leaves that emerge nearly black-purple in the spring. A purple hue remains though the color does fade to a dark green by the end of the summer. This hybrid cultivar is a cross between C. bignonioidies and C. ovata that originated in France more than 100 years ago. Large clusters of fragrant orchid-like white flowers with yellow and purple spots bloom in mid-summer. Persistent bean-like seed pods follow. A fast grower, Purple Catalpa does best in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil.
